Claude does the setup. It asks before anything it should not decide alone.
STEP 1Copy the prompt below.
STEP 2Paste it into Claude Code and send.
STEP 3Open a new chat. The buttons are above the chat box.

Install Jay's Claude Code mods for me: TL;DR, Copy chat and Smart PreCompact. Please:
1. Check that Node.js is there: npx --version. If it is not, tell me to install Node.js from nodejs.org and stop here.
2. Run: npx -y skills add JayGPTPro/context-mods --skill tldr-highlight copy-chat -g -a claude-code -y
3. Run: npx -y skills add JayGPTPro/smart-precompact -g -a claude-code -y. If ~/.claude/skills/smart-precompact already exists, this is an update: first save its config.md outside ~/.claude/skills, and put it back after.
4. Check that each of these exists: ~/.claude/skills/tldr-highlight/.claude-plugin/plugin.json, ~/.claude/skills/copy-chat/.claude-plugin/plugin.json and ~/.claude/skills/smart-precompact/.claude-plugin/plugin.json (on Windows, under %USERPROFILE%\.claude\skills). If there is any other copy or backup of these folders inside ~/.claude/skills, tell me and ask before deleting it: Claude Code would load a mod twice.
5. Check that Python 3 is there (python3 --version, else python --version). Copy chat copies without times when it is missing, and Smart PreCompact's optional hook needs it.
6. Smart PreCompact has an optional hook. Read the section "The hook" in ~/.claude/skills/smart-precompact/README.md, explain it to me in two lines, and ask whether to install it. If I say yes and Python 3 is there: run ~/.claude/skills/smart-precompact/scripts/install_hook.py with that Python, then scripts/compact_hook.py --test.
7. Tell me exactly this: "Open a new conversation in Claude Code. In the desktop app, above the prompt you will see the TL;DR and Copy chat buttons, and from the first reply Smart PreCompact's context meter with its Smart compact button. After a long reply, the paragraphs worth reading turn yellow and a notification says it in one sentence. In this conversation nothing changes, because mods load only in a new one. No buttons there? Your Claude Code version does not run mods yet: update Claude Code and open a new conversation again."

Questions
Good to know.
Is it free?
Yes. All three are free.
Is this an official Anthropic product?
No. These are independent mods I built for Claude Code. They are not made or endorsed by Anthropic.
Does it work in the terminal?
They are built and tested for the Claude Code desktop app, where the buttons sit above the chat box. Mods also load in the terminal, and you get the buttons there, but the yellow highlight is a desktop thing and I have not tested the terminal myself.
I installed it and I don't see a button.
Mods load only in a new conversation, so open one. Still nothing? Your Claude Code version does not run mods yet: update Claude Code and open a new conversation again.
Does TL;DR use my usage?
A little. Each long reply is read once by Claude Haiku, the smallest model, through your own Claude Code. Short replies are skipped. You can turn it off with its button any time.
Does my conversation go anywhere?
Copy chat only puts text on your clipboard. TL;DR sends a long reply to Claude itself, the same account you already work with. Nothing goes to me or to anyone else.
How do I remove one?
Ask Claude to remove it, or run npx skills remove tldr-highlight -g or npx skills remove copy-chat -g. Then open a new chat.
Does it work on Windows?
I built and tested them on a Mac. The install prompt has Windows paths, and Claude adapts the steps. If something breaks, tell me in the community.
Built by Jay Margaliot. I teach Claude Code to people who don't write code, and I build the tools I wish I had.
More mods are coming.
I share every new one first in my free WhatsApp community, with what I learned building it.
